The name of the room, Berlingaccio derives from a party celebrated in Florence on “Fat” Thursday (the last Thursday before carnival). The name probably has a Latin etymology and derives from “berlengo” (table, canteen) probably in honor of food, in particular cakes, which characterize this period of the year. “Berlingare” is also a verb and is the name of the mask (quoted by the 16th century poets) whose main characteristic is that of having fun at the table!

On September 7th, between Florence and neighboring towns, the birth of Mary is celebrated. La Rificolona is the name that the Florentines have given to this event rich in folklore. Tradition has it that the boys bring in parades of paper lanterns, with cheerful and bizarre shapes, hanging from a reed intoning the ancient song. In the early 1600s it was also an opportunity for countries near Florence to sell their goods in a safe place, although tradition has faded over time, the market still resists.

On Easter morning, in Piazza del Duomo, between the Baptistery and the Cathedral, comes an event whose origins date back to the first crusade. The name of this Florentine folk ceremony is Brindellone, commonly called Lo Scoppio del Carro. Tradition has it that it was precisely a Florentine Pazzino de ‘Pazzi who first traced the walls of the Holy City and once back in Florence was celebrated loudly by his fellow citizens. To honor this act of valor, Goffredo di Buglione, Duke of the Lower Lorraine, gave him three shards of the Holy Sepulcher. The holy fire, a symbol of purification, was lit with the sparks emanating from the rubbing of the three stone fragments of the Holy Sepulcher. Today the explosion of the cart and therefore the ignition of the holy fire happens with fireworks
The fires of this wagon are set on fire by the “colombina”, a rocket with the appearance of a white pigeon.

The Martinella was a bell whose tolls led the Florentines to war, which is also called Bellifera.
